💸 How BBB Tax Cuts Affect TN Want to know how the Big Beautiful Bill affects you? Here are a few tax cuts that will impact Tennesseans, as compiled by Americans for Tax Reform. When it comes to families, the doubled child tax credit has been made permanent, as well as the expanded death tax exemption, and enhanced deductions for seniors are available through 2028. A bump in deductions for small businesses has been extended, and no tax on tips is available to employees who receive a W-2 and for independent contractors who use 1099-K, 1099-NEC, or Form 4317s through 2028.
The BBB also nixed the Biden-era 1099-K tax paperwork requirement for third-party payment processors such as Venmo and PayPal. Going forward, “a 1099-K issuance will only occur when both of two thresholds are met: $20,000 in payments in a single year from the same payer and 200 transactions in a single year from the same payer.”
Patrick Gleason, who is a senior fellow at the Beacon Center of Tennessee and the Vice President of State Affairs at Americans for Tax Reform, has done extensive research into the effect of tax policy. Dive into a few of his articles and the full list of tax cuts in the Big Beautiful Bill here.
⛩️ Lee Goes To Asia Governor Bill Lee and Deputy Governor and Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter are taking a strategic international recruiting trip to Asia next week. This is the sixth international recruitment trip made by the governor since taking office, and the pair will travel to Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.
According to McWhorter, more than 60,000 Tennesseans are employed by companies located in the three countries. Tennessee benefits from nearly $20.8 billion in current foreign direct investment from companies in Japan, over $158 million from Taiwan, and about $6 billion from South Korea. “Tennessee is a global leader for its pro-business climate, low taxes and highly skilled workforce, and we’re proud to showcase what makes our state a top destination for industry and innovation,” said Lee in a press release.

👾 AI Summit In Music City CNBC held its first-ever AI Summit in Nashville this week, positioning it as a bridge between tech hubs and emerging artificial intelligence ecosystems in the South. “No company will survive the next decade without a cogent AI strategy and significant plans to invest in the transformative technology,” reads the event website.
The summit included panel discussions about topics such as how to augment human talent with AI rather than replace it, combatting deepfakes in creative industries like music, and governance of new AI technology. Tennessee gubernatorial candidate and Senator Marsha Blackburn attended as a guest speaker to discuss the government’s role when it comes to regulation.
Despite opposition from big tech, Blackburn says that U.S. federal AI regulation is imperative to protect consumers. “The reason the states have stepped in, whether it’s to protect consumers or protect children, is because the federal government has, to date, not been able to pass any federal preemptive legislation,” Blackburn said during the summit. “We have to have the states standing in the gap until such time that Congress will say no to the big tech platforms.”
Blackburn has continued to support the Kids Online Safety Act that aims to establish guidelines to protect minors from harmful material on the platforms that was first introduced in 2022. While the bipartisan legislation has passed the Senate, it has yet to make it through the House.

✹ DRAG RACER NEARLY KILLS PEDESTRIAN

A devastating hit-and-run in Germantown left Cameron Magro hospitalized with multiple fractures, head trauma, and internal injuries after being struck while crossing the street on October 11. Police say the driver, 36-year-old Travis L. Andry, fled the scene after allegedly drag racing through the neighborhood.
Andry has since been arrested and charged with aggravated assault with serious bodily injury, driving on a suspended license, and other offenses. Magro has already undergone several surgeries and faces a long recovery ahead.
His family has launched a GoFundMe to cover the medical expenses.

✹ ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER: A DIALOGUE

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another cemented itself as the Oscar frontrunner and extended Warner Bros.’s record-setting box-office run of #1 films when it debuted in theaters three weeks ago. But the director’s loose adaptation of Thoman Pynchon’s novel Vineland that finds Leonardo DiCaprio taking on the role of Bob, a burnt-out revolutionary protecting his daughter from Sean Penn’s rogue Col. Lockjaw, has drawn both the ire of a host of conservative criticism from Fox News personalities to Ben Shapiro and uninterrogated praise from left-leaning media outlets that willfully ignore the film’s complexities.
As they did last year upon the release of Francis Ford Coppola’s divisive epic, Megalopolis, The Pamphleteer’s editor, Davis Hunt, and writer Jerod Ra’Del Hollyfield share their perspectives on one of the most dynamic and controversial films to hit the big screen in quite some time.
